Water and You – The Powerful Benefits

We all know that our bodies must have water in order to survive but while this liquid has no calories, it is also loaded with minerals that promote good health.  Did you know that the human body is comprised of between 60% and 70% water?  Remember that blood is mostly water, and even major organs such as the lungs and brain, along with muscles that also contain water.  Without adequate intake of water, the body cannot efficiently regulate body temperature, flush out toxins and chemicals, move oxygen to cells, protect organs and joints, and help nutrients travel throughout the body to nourish it.  As you can see, water and you go together, promoting a long, healthy life.

As far as water and you pertaining to intake, it is recommended that people drink anywhere from eight to ten glasses of water daily, more if they can.  A good way to determine the exact amount of water needed is to use your weight, dividing it in two, which equals the number of ounces you should drink daily.  For instance, if you weigh 140 pounds, half of that comes to 70, which means you need a minimum of 70 ounces of water every day.  While that might seem like overkill, it is essential.  In fact, once you become accustomed to increasing your water intake, you will actually begin to crave it.

Other situations will arise in which even more water than the daily recommended amount should be increased.  For instance, skiers in the mountains become dehydrated quite easily, so they need more water.  Then, you plan to travel and fly to your destination, try to drink eight ounces of water for every hour you are in the air.  Then, for people who exercise or are involved heavily in sports, eight ounces of water for every 20 minutes of activity is a great rule to follow.

Typically, a person can tell when he or she is not getting enough water, ultimately becoming dehydrated.  Keep in mind that every time you go to the bathroom or sweat, the body is losing precious fluid, especially if you are physically active.  By not getting enough water, you would likely experience problems such as pain in the lower back region, constipation, headache, and even joint pain.  You might also notice that the color of your urine is a dark yellow to light orange, and has a strong, foul odor.  All of these symptoms of dehydration should be paid attention to and addressed.

We also wanted to provide you with some interesting facts about water, supporting the importance of why you need to drink more than you probably already do.  Although you will need to work your way up to the right amount, remember that water and you are a team for life with great rewards.
